Lummi Island Silent Contact Retreat

A gathering for experienced CI practitioners who wish to spend 4 days moving and living in silent awareness. The container of verbal silence will hold the forms of contact improvisation, authentic movement, contemplative dance practice and meditation, deepening the CI practice and journeying into self-knowledge.

June 25-29, 2025

The retreat will take place on beautiful Lummi Island, near Bellingham, WA.

We will begin at 12 pm on Wednesday, June 25, and end at 3 pm on Sunday, June 29.

Practices

The practices we will use during the retreat are Contact Improvisation, Authentic Movement, and Contemplative Dance Practice. There will also be space for you to practice whatever form of meditation you enjoy, and time for artistic expression.

CONTACT IMPROVISATION will be at the heart of our practice, with daily open jams and guided scores. Open jams offer a free-flowing space for movement and presence, while scores provide gentle structure with suggested focuses like round robin, bodywork, or a mini underscore.

AUTHENTIC MOVEMENT is a practice of movement and witnessing, first developed by Mary Starks Whitehouse and later expanded by teachers like Janet Adler, who coined the term. While verbal sharing is usually a key element, in this silent retreat, we will explore alternative structures, allowing for expression and reflection through non-verbal means.

CONTEMPLATIVE DANCE PRACTICE, developed by Barbara Dilley, integrates structured time for meditation, personal warm-up, and open space for interactive movement exploration.

MEDITATION can be whatever form you practice.

ARTISTIC EXPRESSION is encouraged, please bring your own art and writing supplies.

Opportunities for NATURE CONNECTION and EXPLORATION abound and are encouraged.

Silence

In most CI events, a significant amount of time and energy is devoted to verbal communication and social interaction. In this retreat, we invite you to channel that energy into your movement research, meditation, and self-exploration. This silent retreat offers a unique opportunity to step away from social distractions and technology, fostering deeper presence and focus.

Dea

Luvon

Dea Luvon has been moving, dancing, and sharing the joy of physical expression for over twenty years. Whether performing, choreographing, or teaching, she finds deep connection through movement. She offers classes in Contact Improvisation, Creative Movement, and Movement for Grounding, creating spaces where people can explore embodiment and flow.

With a Master’s in Clinical Social Work and training from the Seattle School of Body Psychotherapy, Dea weaves movement and healing together. She works with individuals and couples, guiding them through somatic therapies like Core Energetics and the Realization Process. Her approach helps people uncover the deep patterns that keep them feeling stuck, using the wisdom of the body to release constriction and step into a fuller, more present life.

Participants

This is an intimate retreat limited to 20 participants. To ensure a common ground of understanding, we require participants to have experience in Contact Improvisation and Authentic Movement and Contemplative Dance Practice. Due to the silent nature of the retreat, there won’t be explanations or classes, therefore the principles that inform these practices must be known and familiar to all.

To register for the Silent Contact Retreat, please fill out an application form. We want to ensure that the retreat is a safe space for all participants and this includes a minimum level of experience in the forms as well as emotional maturity and self-responsibility. Your application will be read carefully by the retreat organizers. After applying, you will receive an email regarding your application status: acceptance, need for more information or waitlist.
